Conspiracy Theory (1995)
Blowtorched thrift store painting, electronics;
13x22x2"; 5 lbs.
Status: collection of Bette Burgoyne
This computer controlled sculpture is constructed from an old gilt framed oil painting
of a landscape. A hole burned in the middle of the canvas reveals charred circuitry.
The piece does absolutely nothing while the viewer is standing
in front of it. Sometimes, just as the viewer is moving away, a tiny red light on
the burnt circuit board flashes, for just a few milliseconds.
A short time later, after the viewer is out of earshot, the piece whispers
almost-intelligible secrets, or laughs derisively.
It hangs using keyholes. It is battery powered, rechargeable, and will run for several
months.
